Abbie Wood set a British record as she won bronze on the opening night of the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest.
The 25-year-old claimed her first world short-course medal in the women’s 200m individual medley with a time of two minutes 2.75 seconds.
USA’s Kate Douglass took gold with a world record of 2:01.63, with team-mate Alex Walsh second in 2:02.65.
Wood came into the event with a personal best of 2:04.77 and qualified fastest in 2:05.16, but despite leading the final at halfway, the American duo prevailed.
“To get a two-second PB at this my point in my career, I’m honestly so shocked with myself,” said the European short-course champion.
“Kate doing a world record alongside me obviously pushed me on, but that felt really good to be back racing in a world-class field.”
The competition continues through to Sunday, 15 December.
