Saquon Barkley scored two rushing touchdowns as the New York Giants won 31-24 at the Minnesota Vikings to reach week two of the NFL play-offs.
The Giants led for most of the wildcard contest to upset the NFC’s third seed.
Earlier, the Buffalo Bills held on for a thrilling 34-31 win at home to the Miami Dolphins.
The pre-season Super Bowl favourites and AFC second seeds, Buffalo soon went 17-0 up yet Miami briefly led 24-20 in the third quarter.
Offences were on top in Minnesota, with the Giants leading 17-14 after two touchdowns apiece in the first half.
Each team scored a touchdown in the third quarter, before a Vikings field goal made it 24-24 early in the fourth.
Running back Barkley, who had a combined 109 yards, capped a 12-play drive with a two-yard score to restore New York’s lead and they held on in a nervy finish.
Quarterback Daniel Jones finished his first play-off game with two touchdown passes, 301 passing yards and 78 rushing yards as the Giants claimed their first play-off victory since winning their fourth Super Bowl at the end of the 2011 season.
The Giants will next travel to NFC East rivals, and number one seeds, the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round.
Hamlin continues to inspire Bills
Buffalo’s game with Miami also went down to the wire, with the Bills continuing to gain inspiration from team-mate Damar Hamlin.
The Bills’ safety watched Sunday’s game from home as he continues to recover from the cardiac arrest he suffered on the field on 2 January but on Saturday he visited the team for the first time since the incident.
“There was a big line of guys ready to love up on him,” said quarterback Josh Allen, who had three touchdown passes and two interceptions. “It was a blessing come true to see him back in the facility.”
Buffalo looked set for a blowout win after touchdowns by Dawson Knox and James Cook, but the Dolphins drew level when third-choice quarterback Skylar Thompson found Mike Gesicki for a touchdown.
A field goal edged the Bills into a 20-17 lead at the half, only for Zach Sieler to score a defensive touchdown for Miami after Allen fumbled.
But Buffalo replied with two quickfire touchdowns from Cole Beasley and Gabe Davis, and after getting back within three during the final quarter. the Dolphins were unable to get within scoring range on their final possession.
The first round of the NFL play-offs, known as the wildcard weekend, continues with one more game on Sunday and another on Monday.
