The Ligue 1 match between Montpellier and Clermont was abandoned on Sunday when visiting goalkeeper Mory Diaw was stunned by a firework that exploded next to him after being thrown from the stands.
With the game in injury time and hosts Montpellier leading 4-2, a pyrotechnic landed near Diaw and went off as he was preparing to take a goal-kick.
After receiving treatment on the field, the 30-year-old was carried off on a stretcher, with the game called off following a crisis meeting of officials.
“The doctor who examined the Clermont goalkeeper certified that he was not in a condition to return to the field. The match is therefore halted definitively,” referee Florent Batta told media at the Stade de la Mosson.
Montpellier were heading for a first home win of the season at the time of the incident, despite having played with 10 men from the 54th minute following Maxime Esteve’s dismissal for two bookable offences.
They had twice seen a lead wiped out as Yohann Magnin levelled for Clermont after Musa Al-Taamari’s opener before Cheick Oumar Konate drew the visitors level again following a Teji Savanier penalty.
A second Savanier spot-kick put the home side ahead prior to Esteve’s red, with Tamari netting his second to extend their lead.
Clermont, who sit bottom of Ligue 1, also had a man sent off as Diaw received treatment on the field.
