No one really knows the exact cause of cellulite — the dreaded bumpy, dimpled skin that's most often found on women's hips, thighs and derrieres — but we know that genetics, an inactive lifestyle and, especially, aging (as our skin loses collagen and elasticity) all contribute to it. The word cellulite itself originated in France in the late 19th century as a neutral medical term. We have Vogue to thank for the negative-to-the-point-of-loathsome connotation it carries today. The magazine famously introduced "cellulite" to American audiences in 1968, in a story titled "Cellulite: The new word for fat you couldn't lose before." Since then, lumpy skin has become enemy number one on women's bodies, with hundreds if not thousands of potential "cures" splashed across lady magazines and social media feeds. It's important to note that cellulite is natural; it can happen to anyone, at any age and any weight. It's also common — more than 80% of post-puberty women experience it — and completely harmless. However, if you've noticed areas of indented skin and are looking to minimize them, there are solutions.
"Cellulite and skin tightening creams work in various ways," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dara Spearman. "Many of these creams are effective for moisturizing, boosting collagen production, exfoliating, tightening the skin, improving circulation and they can even increase skin elasticity."
Dr. Amy Spizuoco, a board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist agrees, "These creams can improve skin texture by smoothing rough patches," she says. "However, they won’t permanently eliminate cellulite and the effectiveness varies from person to person."
The efficacy of topical cellulite treatments has come a long way since 1968, and even more since I started covering beauty trends in the early 2000s. Today the best cellulite creams are formulated with potent, clinically proven ingredients such as retinol, peptides and hyaluronic acid. When used consistently, these products help condition your skin, improving the texture of cellulite and lending a more supple appearance that's bouncier and less dry than it would be on its own.
"Think of [cellulite creams] as part of the equation, along with a healthy lifestyle and more advanced treatments," says Dr. Brendan Camp, a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology. "Hydrated skin always looks better, and certain ingredients like retinol or peptides can help improve skin firmness over time. They can help improve the appearance of the skin, but the effect is temporary. If you’re looking for real, long-term results, treatments like radio frequency, micro-needling or lymphatic drainage massages tend to be more effective."
What to look for in a cellulite cream
The ingredients listed below have been clinically proven to improve skin texture — look for high-quality creams from trusted brands that include at least one or more of the following:
Caffeine: This is an old standby in cellulite treatments and was the star of "body firming" scrubs of the '90s and '00s. "Caffeine helps temporarily tighten and smooth the skin," says Spizuoco. "[It can also] help reduce fluid buildup."
Peptides: Peptides — currently the hottest ingredient in skin care — "help strengthen the skin and improve elasticity," explains Spearman.
Retinol: When it comes to firming the skin, every expert I spoke with agreed that retinol is one of the most powerful ingredients you can use. It works by speeding up cell turnover, which not only smooths skin but also stimulates collagen production, keeping the skin tighter looking over time.
Hyaluronic acid: "This hydrates and plumps the skin for a smoother look," says Spizuoco. Hydration is one of the easiest ways to make dimpled skin look more supple and hyaluronic acid is one of the best ingredients for the job.
Centella asiatica (gotu kola): "This is a plant extract known for its skin-repairing properties," says Camp.
Niacin: "Niacin — which is also known as vitamin B3 — is commonly used to improve blood flow and circulation," says Spearman.
How to apply cellulite creams
For best results, Camp recommends applying cellulite creams to clean, dry skin, "ideally after a shower when your skin is more receptive." He instructs clients to massage the product in using firm, circular motions, which will boost circulation and help with absorption. Camp also recommends using a body brush or massage tool to enhance the effects.
Lastly, "Consistency is key," Camp explains, "so aim for daily use."
Dermatologist-recommended cellulite creams and treatments
Spizuoco likes the combination of cocoa butter and retinol in this lightweight, affordable option, which targets not only cellulite but also dark spots and crepey texture.
Though it's sold for the face, Spearman recommends this affordable retinol serum for treating cellulite as well.
"It's suitable for all skin types, comes in an oil-like serum form, and with constant use it delivers noticeable results over time," Spearman says. "The key ingredients are retinol, which helps promote collagen and elastin production, and squalane, which hydrates the skin. This combination works to improve the skin texture and tone, leaving the skin smoother, firmer and more even."
A quality body brush can help boost circulation, exfoliate and remove dead cells and enhance the impact of cellulite creams for smoother, more glowing skin overall.
Camp says this gentle yet effective retinol formula is "great for firming skin over time." It can also help fade darker spots and bring more clarity to skin tone.
"This is a great option for tightening and firming the skin," Spearman says. "This body cream contains guarana extract, a caffeine-rich ingredient known for its skin-tightening properties. It also features ingredients known as cupuaçu butter, acai oil and Brazil nut oil, which help hydrate and soften the skin. You can apply it all over your body, and it leaves your skin feeling smooth, soft and moisturized.
"It also smells amazing," says Camp of the popular cream (it frequently goes viral on TikTok).
This high-end, luxury cream is a Spizuoco recommendation due to its patented iFirm technology. The formula includes an array of powerful antioxidants, peptides and prebiotics to target rough skin texture, sagginess and even sun damage. Yes, it's pricey, but if you're in the market for big ticket splurge, studies have shown it visibly tightens skin after 12 weeks of use.
